Roman Emperor Caracalla Killed In Carrhae
Apr, 8, 217 AD
Near the end of the Parthian empire, Artabanus IV was at war with his brother Vologases VI who ruled in Babylon. The Roman emperor Caracalla wanted to take advantage of this situation and set out for an expedition towards east in 216. After crossing Tigris and plundering and destroying some towns including Arbela,, Artabanus IV at the head of an army defeated him and made him retreat to Carrhae where he was murdered by one of his own men on April, 8, 217. Caracalla's successor, Macrinus also was defeated at Nisibis. This forced the Romans to conclude a peace treaty according to which they gave up their conquests, gave back what was looted, and also paid a heavy tribute to the Parthians. (Updated: Feb, 11, 2009)
