New Apis Found For Egyptians
After Dariush suppressed the revolts in each corner of the vast Persian empire, he visited the Satrapy of Egypt in September 518 B.C. Aryandes who was the Satrap for more than four years was well acquainted with the country of Nile and told Dariush how he could get support for Persians. A few weeks before Dariush's arrival the Apis bull had died. The great king buried Apis and ordered the search for a new Apis, which was found on November, 9. Dariush also gave precious gifts to the temple of Neith of Sais and the sanctuary of Osiris. He then invited the wise men of Egypt to collect the old pharaonic laws. This respect towards other nations' cultural values has been unique characteristics of the Persian empire.
Dariush also ordered construction of a canal between the river Nile and the Red Sea; a great project of the time which was completed in 497. (Updated: Feb, 15, 2008)
